Polish soldiers fought in the armies of all three partitioning empires. Of key symbolic importance were Piłsudski's Legions, formed alongside the Austro-Hungarian forces, as well as a large Polish army rising abroad. At the same time, Polish politicians continued their efforts to secure the best possible position for Poland on the international stage.
